How to Plan an Affordable Weekend Adventure Without Booking a Hotel

A weekend getaway can become expensive surprisingly quickly.

Hotel rooms, restaurant meals, transportation, and entertainment can turn two days away from home into a substantial travel bill.

But a memorable weekend doesn't necessarily require a hotel.

Start by looking for outdoor destinations within a manageable driving distance from home. Depending on where you live, you may find:

  • State parks
  • Campgrounds
  • Hiking trails
  • Lakes
  • Beaches
  • Scenic drives
  • Public recreation areas

Instead of trying to visit several destinations, choose one area and explore it well.

Camping can provide an alternative to traditional lodging, although campground and entrance fees vary considerably. Always check current reservation requirements and prices before traveling.

Food is another area where planning can help control costs.

Pack a cooler with drinks, sandwiches, fruit, snacks, and simple camping meals. Preparing some food before leaving can also give you more time to enjoy your destination.

Use equipment you already own whenever possible. You don't need a completely new camping setup for every trip.

Pack the essentials:

  • Water
  • Cooler
  • Backpack
  • Appropriate sleeping gear
  • Portable lighting
  • Power bank
  • Weather protection
  • Basic outdoor essentials

Then focus on experiences that don't require constant spending.

Hike a trail.

Have lunch beside a lake.

Watch the sunset.

Wake up early and make coffee outside.

Sometimes the trips we remember most aren't the ones with luxury hotel rooms.

They're the simple weekends when we went somewhere new, spent most of the day outside, and returned home with a camera full of memories.

Adventure doesn't always require a big travel budget. Sometimes it simply requires deciding to go.
