How to Get Your Camping Gear Ready for Winter Storage

Content

When camping season slows down, it's tempting to put everything in the garage and forget about it until spring.

That can create unpleasant surprises when your next adventure arrives.

Before storing equipment for an extended period, inspect and clean it according to manufacturer instructions.

Start with your tent. Make sure it is completely dry before storage. Packing damp outdoor equipment can encourage odors, mildew, and material deterioration.

Do the same with sleeping bags and other fabric equipment. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning and storage recommendations rather than automatically leaving everything compressed for months.

Clean cookware, water containers, coolers, and food-storage equipment thoroughly. Remove all food and crumbs before putting them away.

Next, review your electronics.

Recharge or prepare rechargeable lanterns, headlamps, power banks, and other devices for storage according to their manufacturer instructions. Remove disposable batteries from equipment when appropriate to reduce the risk of leakage during long-term storage.

Organize everything into categories:

  • Shelter
  • Sleeping
  • Cooking
  • Lighting and power
  • Hiking
  • Clothing
  • Storage and utility

This is also a good opportunity to identify damaged or missing equipment.

Make a replacement list now instead of discovering the problem the night before your first spring trip.

Proper storage doesn't just make your garage look better.

It protects your equipment and makes your next adventure easier.

Take care of your outdoor gear after the season ends, and it will be ready when the next adventure begins.
